The weather within Fribourg Canton was very cloudy and gloomy for a number of days. Higher altitudes to escape the clouds and face the sunshine seemed like a beautiful idea. Jaun is a village in-between the pre-alps region, mostly known for a good access towards the Gastlosen mountains. We crossed paths with a few trail runners, dog walkers and many hikers.
On the trail, there is Ritzli-Alp Restaurant facing magnificent views towards the Gastlosen pre-alps. Hôtel de la Cascade in Jaun village also offers dining opportunities. There are plenty of occasions for picnic spots around the surrounding meadows, however we only came across 1 bench.
This hiking route is a part of Freiburger Voralpenweg SchweizMobil route no. 79; and Alpine Panorama Trail route no. 3.
The parking is located close to the Jaun's waterfalls and it may be an idea to see them from a closer perspective before setting off on the hike.
The trail can be viewed as challenging and steep, however it is worth the views towards Gatlosen mountains and towards Schwarzsee lake. The trail mostly follows meadow and gravel paths, opening up to the views throughout the entire hike. The ascent starts directly from the parking, going above the village. To avoid the steepness on the way back, we followed a road with a smaller gradient.
