Bern Canton, Frinvillier

Distance: 5.03 km in both directions.

Walking time: 1h 07 min in both directions.

Elevation gain: 233 m, but other sites suggest it is 172m.

Access: Car or bus.

Parking: at Taubenlochweg - 47.167651, 7.253409. Follow signs for Restaurant des Gorges from Frinvillier village centre.

Bus: stop at Frinvillier Taubenloch, additional ~10min walk to join the route at Restaurant des Gorges.

Alternative access: Park around Tierpark Zoo or in Biel city and take the hiking path from the opposite direction to what we walked.

A very family friendly outing. It starts with calm, quiet sounds and ends with hectic waters. The whole pathway is quite hilly, going up and down, but without any huge ascents or descents. The hike is rather easy and even doing it in early June (and in bad weather), we passed a lot of families and dogs. There are no steps and the route is quite wide, but there are many large stones, making it too difficult to walk with a pram. There is Restaurant des Gorges at the start/end of the walk offering food and rooms to stay overnight. We also passed multiple BBQ points on this short route, including one at the parking.

Once reaching the restaurant, the whole pathway is next to the canal and/or river and follows a forest way. Soon, it reaches beautiful gorges and the pathway crosses above them through multiple bridges. We thought it was a very nice way of allowing the visitors to admire the river and the gorges surrounding the bridges. We passed many small waterfalls and interesting rock formations. At times, the rocks were giving little headroom and we had to duck down with our baby backpack. Closer towards the zoo, we noticed bird nests on the opposite side of the walk. Since this hike is very busy, I don't think one needs to worry about bird breeding seasons and associated safety to walk through the gorge. Bringing along binoculars may be a lovely idea, as it may be very nice to watch the birds within their nests. I really look forward to our son getting older and to come back to this beautiful place with him walking the entire way himself (and this time, we will also pack binoculars!).
