We hold very fond memories of this hike and highly encourage it! It was a really stunning walk and a really stunning destination. Arnen lake can be reached by a paid mountain road if you wish to only visit the lake; however I highly encourage you to do the walk - it was such a pleasant hike through the reservoir! There was not much seating on the way to the lake, but there were plenty of opportunities for picnics at the destination. We hiked this route at the start of May (off season) and we met a few hikers. There is Huus am Arnensee restaurant at the lake with a nice picnic and play area next to it.

The hike started through a very pretty forest pathway, which was rather steep. There were some steps and tree roots popping out of the ground. Once we stepped out of the forest, we joined the road, which we followed until reaching the lake. The road was going slightly up and down, which was a nice break after the short, steep ascent in the forest. The road opened up to amazing views at the mountains, which are not really visible from Saane Valley. I think this unique sight adds a special aspect to this hike. We took our time strolling through this part of the route. The last kilometre before reaching the lake was quite steep again, but since it is quite a short distance, we didn't think it was hard. The sight of the lake was absolutely stunning! Since we did this hike quite early in the year and the winter was quite harsh, the lake was still frozen and there were snow patches around us. There was not a lot of water in the lake, but the empty banks indicated how high and big it can reach to in the year. The visible mountains from around the lake even reached to those surrounding glacier 3,000.

Boats and pedalos are available for hire at the lake - more information can be found here. It is also allowed to fish and to swim at the lake.

This hike could be extended by strolling around the lake. Unfortunately, we were not able to do so, because the route was still damaged after winter. More information about this walk can be found on Gstaad Tourist website here.
