Fribourg Canton (but at junction with Vaud), Châtel Saint Denis

Distance: 9.20 km.
Walking time: 2h 15 min
Elevation gain: 365 m.
Access: Car or train.
Parking: at Avenue de la Gare.
A calm hike with pretty views if the weather if clear. It is a suitable walk with dogs (we met quite a few). During the initial section of the trail we came across a lot of people and cyclists. As we followed the trail, we met less and less people. There were not many benches but one could find a nice spot in nature.
The hike starts through the city's main road and bounces to the left to join the forest pathway next to the river. The route is quite high to where the river flows. Initially the forest path was wide and after a while we followed a tarmac road, which opened into the fields. From here, we had a beautiful view at the distant mountains. We also met many cows, which our son enjoyed. Towards the way back, the trail turned into a single path. Once crossing the river, the ascent was quite steep and we felt quite relieved when it finished. During this ascent we came across a fallen tree and to cross it, we took our baby backpack off. We started declining again until we went back to the river. The descent was also quite steep. When we were there, the bridge was closed to public due to its old age. Some people were crossing the river through the stones, while some were slowly crossing the old bridge one-by-one. It was also a nice spot for a break and a number of people were taking advantage of it. Once we were on the other side, we started climbing up again. Once we got out of the forest the incline got slightly smoother.
Next to the parking, there is a restaurant point with scenic playground for kids. Our son seemed to enjoy playing there after the hike and meeting others in similar age group to him. There are a few benches on the route, but it is easy to find good spots on the grass next to the hiking pathway throughout this hike. The deviation point from the loop to the summit also has a fresh drinkable alpine water point to refill bottles. There were no obvious BBQ points, but there are plenty of possible BBQ spots around the area or surrounding lakes for a BBQ before/after-the-hike.
